3 Simple Ways to Make your Small Rental Appear Larger

Hey Hosts,

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but you don’t need to have a large space to make a BIG impact. There is something about a small space that feels cozy and inviting but it’s never a bad thing to give the illusion of more space. So instead of worrying about the size lets focus on what we can control like making your space appear larger and Wowing your ideal guests!

Tip 1: Light/Neutral Paint colours

When it comes to paint, light & neutral is always best. This is especially true when you are dealing with a smaller space because lighter will make a space automatically appear brighter and more spacious. If you are dealing with a space that has minimal lighting, the LRV (Light reflective value) of a paint colour is going to be your best friend. The LRV scale goes from 0-100- 0 being (black) and 100 being (white). Minimal lighting means you are going to want to pick a paint that falls somewhere in the higher LRV category to keep your rental from looking dark and dungeon like. I know that is going deep but it’s really a life saver when choosing colours. Here are my 3 favourite neutral paint colours to get your wheels spinning.

  • Benjamin Moore- Pale oak

  • Benjamin Moore- Dove Wing

  • Benjamin Moore- Cloud White

Tip 2: Use mirrors to reflect more light

This is such a fun way to add stylish décor to your rental that will help make your space appear larger by reflecting more light into the room.  Any shape or size mirror will work but the bigger the better to give the illusion of a larger space (be sure the scale of the mirror fits the room). My favourite way to use mirrors are over console tables, over sofas or on an accent wall.

Tip 3: Properly Scaled Furnishings

If you take anything from this blog, this tip will be the most important when dealing with small spaces. You want to ensure the furniture you are choosing is the proper size for the space. There is nothing worse than an oversized sofa making a room feel cramped. There are so many options for comfortable small-scale furniture now a days. A few favorite stores that carry small scale furniture are article, Ikea and crate and barrel. Check out a few options here.

I hope you found these tips helpful, and you feel excited about the possibilities for your small short-term rental. That’s all for today, I’ll be back next week with more design tips and tricks.
